Post Is this a good trans to buy

I found a turbo 400 for a rebuild at a good price it is a turbo 400 out of and 81 chevy p/u. are those as good as the car ones or are there a difference. and the only change to bolt up to my sbc is to change tailshaft for the drive shaft?

thanks
dan

it's the same transmisson as the car model. what is your current transmisson. t 350 or power glide. if you are useing either of these then yes you will need to find a short tail shaft and replace it or shorten your drive shaft

the pickup trans has extra clutch plates, heavier sprag clutch. the 400 turbo is about 3" longer than the glide or the 350 turbo. you will have to have a driveshaft made and modify or get a new crossmember

well it was a pg. but I need a new drive shaft any ways so I can use the tailshaft that is on it (truck) and just get a new shaft and measure from tail to carrier? but the 81 400 model is no different, I plan to have rebuilt with kit from jegs and install a 3500 stall converter for my 406 sb and change over to manual valve body. this would be good builder trans?
