Good valve spring compressor?

I will be doing this on a bench. Is is necessary to get one of these off a tool truck? Mac, Cornwell, Snap-ON? Or just Amazon, Craftsman? What's a decent one?

Depends on how often you will use the compressor.. A very good one is marketed by Lisle and available at auto parts retailers. It will last a long time as long as you are not using it on BBC roller sprngs. :spank:

If your looking to save some money there is one that works well for me after I made a couple of cheap mods to it. Maybe your strong enough to use it as is? (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/otc-4572/overview/) I wouldn't pay much attention to their description, or if you figure out how to use it with the heads installed, show me!
Its similar to the (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/wmr-w89409/overview/) , but seems much stronger, or at least it worked for some roller beehives that the other wouldn't because it flexed too much(jaws spread).
I drilled two holes(1/4") in the handle close to the middle of its width. Got a piece of 3/4" alum bar stock about 12" long that was in the scrap pile at work. Drilled a 1/4" hole in it. Bolted it on and drilled another hole with the hande as a guide. Got a piece of 1" pipe at Lowes for less than $5 to use as an extension. Works great. Albeit a little work, beats spending $150 for something that you only use in a blue moon, at least it was for me.
FWIW,
ssmonty

There is no reason to spend a bunch of money on a valve spring compressor if you have a spare "C" clamp laying around the garage. Here is my compressor I made and have used on BBC & SBC. Much stronger that any that you can buy and will compress any valve spring.
