The people who build stuff know how much time it takes to measure, weld, grind, check, recheck, regrind, something. This takes hours. For ONE piece. These TV shows are an hour long, with commercials thrown in every 10 minutes. No way they could ever show the actual build process of anything in that length of time. And who would sit there and watch a show about some guy grinding on a bracket for an hour? Or someone welding for hours on a roll-cage at 3am with bloodshot eyes and a shaky hand? We've been there. I don't want to watch a show about it!

Remember when TLC actually was "the LEARNING Channel?" They had shows on building houses. and how to do it. The show would run an hour at a time and would take a whole TV season to get the house done. They might take 3 weeks just to choose an electrical contractor and follow him around as they showed about 1/100th of the actual work of wiring the house.

I watched those shows.

Apparently I am not the "typical TV viewer" because the format changed, the then the shows changed, then "TLC" has less "learning" than any other channel as they joined the race to the bottom (My shows are dumber than yours!)

There are not many people who watch the "Yankee Woodwork" or the other shows that try to look like they want to be a "Here's how you do it" show.

Even the cooking shows are dumber & dumber. Just try to make something the way those "celebrity chefs" do it. (Then I double-dog-dare ya to try eating it!)

Is it any surprise that the Builder car shows are so dumb?

IMHO it's WAY past due, like after the first three episodes. They have only the producer to blame for this, all his productions follow the same line.

We are talking about cycles, I have to hope more learning shows will return. Look over the years at most anything from movies to books to tv, there are groups of similar shows after a hit is made, they copy. When all that hype dies off someone else makes a hit that strikes a chord with the public and then that is copied. Let's hope that the public is tired of this stuff and wants something with substance.

My wife cooks "celebrity chef" recipes all the time. In fact she made Alton Brown's Bourbon Pecan Pie and Paula Deen's French Toast Casserole for Thanksgiving. Both were excellent, by the way.

We also get American Top Gear, seems to go slower than the UK version.

Does she start with everything all prepped by the off-stage crew, all nicely measured into separate bowls and placed in order on the counter before she starts, so she can do it ALL in half an hour? Somehow the TV audience seems to think that all the prep work just "happens", and THAT is my beef with how unrealistic it all is. Yes you can cook like them, but not in a half hour, minus time out for commercials!

Same on bike-build/car build shows. Like someone on here said, they never show the hours & hours of work to get from the rough first "trial fit" to final paint. They don't even acknowledge that the work is done that way.

Then your customer wants only 5 hours charged on fixing his car after a wreck because that's all it took the "Tootles" to build a whole bike! "Boid Codpiece" always seemed to build a complete car in ten days, with (it seemed) 8 of those days spent waiting for parts. Full paint prep and paint all happened overnight before the car was shipped!

I can´t believe a man, Paul Sr., would say such things about his son.

but wait, they didn't cover the whole gamut of gimmicky bikes yet...there was never a Mc Donald's bike, there was never an X-men bike, there was never a green energy bike, there was never an angry bird bike, there was never a star wars bike. What the hell, there was plenty of more corny gimmicky bikes to make.

I think they should have a show about meth. You always see before and after pics and wonder what the hell goes on inbetween or on a day to day schedule. Just a real life show about the day to day life of tweaks-lol. You can have one that's homeless, one that's young who lives at home and his parent's don't know, one who has a good job and lives a double life, some that are recovering, and some who are recovering and go back on, and one that's about to croak just for shock and awe-lol I'm a sick mind.
