Post Goodwrench crate engine

We have just installed a new goodwrench crate engine in 1972 chevy pickup. The engine is a 350 small block. When we first srarted the engine it ran extremly hot but that was cured by taking out the new temp sender from NAPA and putting in the 30 year old from the old engine. For the first 10 to 15 minutes the engine ran white smoke came out the exhaust. The smoke smelled of antifreeze. Than the white smoke stopped and we ran the engine for an hour and everything seems fine. Any ideas what caused the smoke. We thought bad head gasket. Thanks

ok was just curious from the way you were talking it sounded like you were just burning out residual coolant from a past blown head gasket i have installed many engines crate motors and rebuilds i have done a small amount of smoke is normal but usually goes away by the time the cam is broke in

I would retorque the intake, sounds like a little coolant got past the new gasket and was inhaled. Once warm the leak sealed itself, it's always good practice to retorque everything anyway. Don't believe those "non-retorqueing" head gaskets, I always retorque and they have always needed it.

We retorqued the intake manifold. It needed it. Everything seems to be fine now. Thanks for your responses.
