Get the sawzall, How 'bout an Eldorado or Toronado 500 inch engine and tranny in the back. Even a late 80's Riviera would be intersting to stick in.

I can remember when there were quite a few running around. I have a friend who has several and I believe he converted on to a turbo using all parts from a similiar turbo charged car.
I think the idea is great and I wish there were more of these still made. "Utes" are big in Australia and many are still offered there.
Also don't forget the VW Rabbit pickup of about the same era. Those could be had with a diesel that got about 45 mpg.

45 mpg with a diesel? Sounds like ford's 2.3L 4 banger diesel introduced in 1985!

Yes everyone had a diesel back then. Ford used a very nice little German made diesel in the Ranger and escort but I don't remember much about them. Even Lincoln Town Cars could be had with a straight 6 diesel but I never actually saw one. Toyota had a real nice little diesel in their pickups that would get 35-40 and run forever, pretty low on power though.
