google earth -- newest satellite imaging technology
Previously we discussed new satellite imaging software from NASA that enables people to see 3D topographical images of earth.
Google has just upped the ante with their new "Google Earth" software. You can zoom in on specific locations, get directions, maps, addresses, etc. And, you can see high-resolution 3D views of buildings and terrain. Rumor has it that Googlers have been driving around the streets in the Bay Area with digital cameras mounted to slow-moving vehicles so that they can establish a method of videotaping buildings and other landmarks. For now, it's just fun to play with. But the implications are potentially very interesting. The software has a free version, and two pay versions. It's available here: http://earth.google.com/ . Screenshots are attached to this post.

Thats pretty cool, its downloading right now for me. Thanks Jon.
I remember somethign cool that was posted on alldumb.com(I think?), anyway someone had gone through the google maps and posted pictures off all kinds of stuff they found like Micheal Jackson's neverland ranch. They found where Area 51 was located but in the picture it had just white boxes like it was blotted out on purpose. Its pretty cool. Brad |

Just a question, when you type in an adress or look for something, does it take the image of that certain place at the current time? Or is it all preset already and you're just looking it up and zooming in? What I mean is, when I zoom in on a building, am I seeing it in its current (at that exact same time) time, or was that shot taken like a year ago?
It says "streaming" in the bottom when your looking up places so I was wondering if the satelite is looking it up at that exact time. It's a supèr cool program Mike |
