Well I have gotten my 53 Lincoln 317ci running fairly smooth. But when I put it into gear it trys to die out. I have to pump the gas to get it going. I can't seem to find any vacume leaks or such but I may be missing them.
What can cause this problem. Trys to stall out in reverse and forward gears.
Am I mistaken or do some vehicles have to different settings for park idle and running idle? I could be totally off the mark but if I infact due have a clue then that might be your problem.
To find a vaccum leak try spraying carb cleaner (or if you have it propane) around the engine compartment and that should allow you to hear the leak as the engine idle will kickup a bit if you find the leak.
Ouch. Be careful with those substances around the engine. Plain water with a little soap goes a long way. Water has oxygen and the engine will COME ALIVE if the water gets inside. The water will also be heavy enough to close (temporarily) a leak. A car in park idles faster because there is no load. Put it in drive or reverse and the tranny engages putting a load on the engine causing it to slow down. Set the idle up around 1100 and try the water. Seems to me those old Lincolns use to run a bit rich and idle about 900-1000 in gear. Nice car.
Yeah I realize that. However the carb cleaner and propane have worked well in the past. If your not going to do something carefully then you shouldn't be near an engine at all. In the future though I will watch what I say when it pertains to potentially dangerous advice.

Just the end of my garden hose. Na. I have lots of little spray bottles around. Work well for many things.
