Post Got the rear end home

I got my '76 Nova rear end home last night. Iam putting it under my '49 Chevy truck. Got a couple starting questions. One, There is a little white plastic thingie sticking up on the center chunk on the passanger side. has a little cap on it. What is it?? A vent? Second, will it hurt to stand it up on end? The tires and rims are still on it was wanting to stand it up long ways so it will fit in a corner til I need it. Little short on space. Plus would be easier to paint. Thanks for your help!

I wasnt sure if standing it on its end if all the fluid would run down into the tudes or not. Didnt want it to damage something inside it or it just plain leak out everywere. Iam new to working on rear ends. So will probably have a lot of spupid questions for a week or two. Thanks!

I stand them on end regularly for the same reason you mentioned, if it leaks your seal is bad and needs replaced anyway. I haven't had any leak yet.
