Post got a sb 400 Need input

I've recently come across a 1974 c-20 van
with a 400 cid sb engine engine.chilton book
states 8:1 comp ratio.I have'nt opened it up yet
but thinking 4 bolt since it's in a ext.pass van
question: Can this thing be built up or should
i try finding a 350 and go for 383? any input would be appreciated

Ditto, great motor. Slap some 5.7" rods in there and punch to .030 to make a 406 and enjoy!

Or use a 350 crank and make a destroked 377. You want something that revs fast, thats it.

Using your internet browser type "Casting Numbers". There a web page that list all/most casting number used by GM and this could give you some inside as to what's inside the engine, such as 2 or 4 bolt main....If you can't find it e-mail me and I look it up for you. <img src="graemlins/pimp.gif" border="0" alt="[pimp]" />

Gotta agree, I have bought the last two 400's I have came across as they are hard to find these days. They make awesome street motors. Gotta love the torque.

Definatly build it. 400 small blocks are awsome motors. I switched from a 350 to a 400 in my 69 camaro and the torque increasewas amazing and its so much more fun to drive, Its been very reliable too for the way ive been driving it.

thanks 4 the response people.
i've been fixin cars for about 15 yrs now
but to spec not high performance.my favorite engine is the buick 3.8 sfi dual turbo and super charged.so when i saw the 400 my spidey sense went
off but did'nt know why.dont get me wrong now i've
worked on plenty of tuned port 305's and outlaw 350's but i can't honestly say i've even seen a small block 400.so 1st thing monday morninig i'll
be picking this jewel up thanks for helping me decide folks. ps i'll be picking your brains some more once i start the rebuild so excuse mt ignorance.
