Got a water pump question

I'm working on a '46 Chevy Panel with a '78 SBC 350. Its got the orginal style radiator, all copper & brass, in it and the fan to radiator clearance is to close for me right now, less than 1/2". The PO had a flex fan setup for the motor but I want to go to a clutch fan. I can get my clearance, it will be 3/4" or better, if I go from the long water pump to a short pump. I looked at a short pump from a '78 Corvette 350 engine but don't know anything about the flow rates. If I change it over will it hurt, help or even work alright?

Thanks
David

same

to the best of my knowledge both the Chevrolet standard short and long pumps flow the same. Only the aftermarket Edelbrock performance pumps have more flow and better impellers. I've swapped a few in my time and no difference between the two.
You could also fit an electric fan instead of running a waterpump driven fan and save a couple of horsepower.

If you go with the short pump, you have to change alternator location, change pulleys, different brackets etc. Is there a spacer on the fan you can get rid of or change to get more clearance? Maybe space the rad ahead a little.

Looked at your journal......lose the spacer, or at least get a shorter one.

The Corvette pump probably has a 3/4" shaft stub for the fan, normal 350 pump is 5/8".
