GPS System with Remote Camera?

I'm interested in using a remote camera in place of a passenger-side mirror on my '54 Chevy pickup/street rod. I'm thinking a 4" x 6" video screen, built into an overhead console, would be pretty cool ... and I heard there are some GPS systems that include remote viewing.

Has anyone here done anything like this? Any ideas or pointers you can offer? Maybe a scrapyard might be a resource?

Thanks.

Alan

My Winnebago has cameras on both sides, mounted in body, activated by the turn signals, with a 6 inch screen in the dash/console, maybe research their sites for manufacturer.

Like you mentioned, maybe an RV scrapyard for backup cams.

That's what I needed to hear. Thanks, man. I'll definitely be looking into this and if it happens, I'll have a photo tutorial on it, on my web site.

License plate frame kits?? That sounds cool! Where do I look? What do I search for?

Thanks, Matt!

PS - I saw some on Amazon ... it looks like I need to purchase some sort of video screen to go with the camera, right?

Another good source for that stuff is Crutchfield.

Typically if you buy a video capable receiver from them they throw in one of the $100 cameras for free.

The Receivers that are capable of displaying a rear view camera are usually triggered automatically with a wire from the stereo that taps into the back-up light circuit. It would be neat to trigger your side-view camera to come on with the turn signal, but you would need a turn signal switch with an additional turn circuit that does not flash, like one you would have in a car that has cornering lights. You will probably still want to be able to trigger the camera to come on manually for parallel parking, precision backing, etc.

Making it work is the easy part. Finding a good place to mount the camera so it works well and doesn't look like an afterthought could be a bit difficult.

Good luck....

Joe G.

hi,
depending on the monitor you end up using, you may want to make sure the camera you acquire has reverse imaging...made to be used as a rear view camera. otherwise left will be right, right left. some cameras have a loop/jumper to that you can use to select imaging. audiovox cameras have that feature. some monitors will allow you to reverse the image. that would allow more freedom in camera selection.
hope this helps
