think about it...... do you want to take a chance later when its all done and have a failure do to useing a non graded home depot nut??

go 5 for normal stuff and 8 for heavy and make sure to use a bolt in the nut while welding for shape and to keep slag out

good luck

What Rob said...plus remember that the grade numbers designate hardness as well as tensile strength. So do not try to cool them with anything after you weld...let them air cool so you will not lose any temper.

Check around for an industrial fastener supplier as they do make nut plates for that sort of application..works a lot better than welding a nut in place..

When welding nuts, i use a piece of threaded carbon rod( available at your welding supply house in various sizes) to keep the threads clean. As welding the nut will shrink it some, you need to run a tap in them to resize the thread. Cage nuts are a better solution if there is some access to the back side. If not, I would use a Rivet nut. If things go bad, they can be knocked out and replaced from the outside. The fancy tool is nice, but not necessary. They can be set with a bolt and airwrench or just plain wrench.
