gran torino- Pinging

i have a 1972 ford gran torino, which i have recently purchased ,it has a 351clevland 2bbl which seems to be pinging under load, it seems to be running quite hot as well, i have heard that maybe removing the air con equipment may help it to run cooler, then also i guess it may be that the timing is out , so any help on this matter would be much appreciated, thanks

Sounds like the timing needs to be retarted a little... Does the motor kick back when trying to start it? (Hard to crank)

it cranks over great , although when hot it sometimes wont start unless accelerator held fully down, it generally runs really well otherwise

Arrow

Those were in the early era of pollution controls and have several little devices that could affect it. I think it has an egr, they are used to cool combustion temps, might check that it's functioning. If it is the plate type, the early aluminum ones had a bad deterioration problem and would errode away creating a lean condirion that would also cause that.
