Just brought home a 72 chevelle with a "supposed" newly built 383 SBC. I took the valve cover off to check head castings and found a grey thick paste-like substance on the tops of the valve cover. Good news it the car has roller rockers but I dont know if this is left over cam lube or if I have a problem. Car runs good save for the carb is not being set up right. No smoke or anything like that.
Is this cam lube from a rebuild or is this likely from a coolant leak? Also, the dipstick oil color is fine.
Any help on this is appreciated! I know the guy I got it from is not going to tell me it is messed up.
