grille shell lacing

I would like to replace the lacing on the grille of my 34 Ford.
at the top where it curves around the radiator the old lacing is installed using 2 pieces.
I would like to keep it one piece so my question is how to do this without the lacing bunching up?
also is there a tool to flatten the rivets for the lacing ?
thanks.

I used an adhesive backed rubber gasket instead of the lacing.
