I just got the brake and steering kit for 37 Spindles with the flat steering arms. The steering arms have some interference at the spindle and one or the other needs to be ground down, or the kit returned. Which do I hack on, one or both? I am a little nervous about removing material on stuff that steers the car.... so returning the kit is an option, I just don't know who sells another complete kit - I need simplicity.

A person might think that by "kit" they mean that the stuff works together. Maybe that's just my interpretation.

A picture would help, or a little better explanation of exactly where the interference is.

First thing I would do is, get a hold of the supplier, asking why you need to be grinding on their parts.....Maybe, there is another way around this problem.

Here's what I have.... the caliper brackets are on the correct sides (per their markings) and the caliper is on the 2:30 o'clock position (ish). the interference is between the steering arm and the caliper bracket. It looks like quite a bit of material would have to be removed. I double checked with the orientation of everything with the drawing... I compared it to the old parts and it looks close (old spindles were factory with the arms part of the spindle).

The kits from speedway comes with a bushing now.You use to have to grind them.A friend just bought one from speedway and it came with bushing.

Hopefully they are open tomorrow...or Monday. I just got my kit in last week... there's no bushing in it.

A couple of grade 8 washers inbetween the arm and spindle would do the trick. Or a single washer and a little grinding on the arm and a little on the caliper bracket would do it. The side you would be grinding is not the stressed side anyway. The upper leg on the caliper bracket is the one that takes the load.


The forged arms don't have that fitment problem.

Here is something to think about...I wouldn't use the flat arms on a street car. Flat arms need to be used with heim type ends.... Those ends get loose pretty fast on the street, as there is no dust seals and no good way to keep them greased.

I am definitely going to go with the forged arms, it looks like the flat ones won't have enough clearance under the frame anyway. Thanks!

The forged arms come in several types, some are formed with a drop to clear the radius rods, hairpins, 4 bars, frame or whatever to accomodate dropped axles.

I bought the same arms and had to weld on 2 1/2" spacers for them to clear the calipers. Seems like everything I've bought from Speedway I've had to modify or buy something else to make it work. And all the brake parts and steering stuff has come from them, and THEY said would work. right! Got a drawer full of extra stuff, including their drop spindles. Maybe use them on my next project. Anyway sorry for getting off track... but I'd return them if I could and not grind on them.
