Grinding Noise Coming Out Of Steering Colum

Another question bout my S10 guys....I notice when im driving that the gear shift on my steering colum it sounds like theres a grinding noise coomin out of it specially when it shifts into 3rd gear at low rpm.If i hold it forward and a little bit up it seems to go away...I was told the linkage could be loose inside? Any ideas? its got the 350TBI and a 700R4 transmission

im kind of confused here

grinding coming from the shift linkage/column itself ?

and only from there ?

maybe the exhaust is on the linkage under there by the trans

block the wheels for both directiond and get under there and check it out with the shifter in various positions, mainly drive and park though.

these s-10 columns, especially these years ones- like yours and my 91 one- are known for column wear issues and being out of synch with the trans range detents, etc.

so it could be vibrations being amplified etc., from the exhaust gettong on the linkage.

or at least is a good place to start at anyways. especially since you said if you hold it up some or something and it changes it.

do some good visual on it, under there

youll figure it out surely

When the engine and tranny swap were done was the column shifter bypassed in favor of a floor shifter? If so it`s likely the shifter itself vibrating. When these are bypassed I use a lock tie to tie it in it`s park position so there are no issues with neautral safety switches and to keep it tight so it doesn`t vibrate. if this is the case then you should see the selection lever right beside the steering column on the fire wall in the engine compartment.
Lastly so it don`t look too bad I remove the pin from the column shift and remove the shifter arm entirely.

nope it wasnt bypassed am still usin the colum shifter but here might be some more information...i bought the truck off a guy who bought the truck off a guy who did the swap so i dont know to much about about it till i can get it up on a hoist and look underneath and what not. I am 3rd owner of the truck now...First Chevy to boot so lol so far im liking it. Now some more info....neutral is really drive, then one click up is neutral, than another click up is reverse, than finally park is park so obviously something is not lined up could that be part of the vibration noise?
