Ground Clamp on welder makeover?

I have a Lincoln pro 180 220 volt welder. I had problems welding with it and determined the problem was that serrated copper strap in the ground clamp. I repositioned it and it works for now but doesn't look like it will last.

Is there any reason I can not replace that by taking a 1/2 inch copper pipe, crush it flat in a vise, grind off each side, which would give me two flat pieces of copper, take one of the flat pieces of copper and install it in place of the old serrated copper strap that keeps working loose?
