Grumpy was the Warren Johnson of his era. legendary Super Stock drag racer and engine builder of the 60s. Any engine he built is probably top notch.

Hey Big....Do a search for Bill Grumpy Jenkins. You'll come up with a bunch of hits. Grumpy was his nickname. Also his trademark was his cigar he always had hanging out of his mouth. Check some of these sites:

And there is now a Pro Stock running that very famous "Grumpy Jenkins" on the side of it and he's still puffin that stogie. Saw it and him last week on TV both O'Rielly's Nationals and at Dallas.
Loved that car when he was driving it. Also like the Sox and Martin cars too.

Not to take anything away from Warren Johnson but he should live so long to be on the same level with "da' Grump". Grumpy was one of the founding fathers of Pro Stock if not "THE" founding father. That black and gold "Jenkin's Competition" arrow on the rear 1/4 panel was probably as well known as the Chevy Bowtie to gearheads in the 60's thru 80's. His cars were the stuff legends were made of and all others were judged by.

I just put the Warren Johnson reference in for the young'uns. Saying Warren is in the same league With Grumpy is like saying Kenny Bernstein is equal with Don Garlits or Don Prudohmme.

If you think the "Grumpy" was just a nickname, I know better. I met him once at a local dragstrip in about 1980. I asked for an autograph. I thought he was going to throw something at me. Probably having a bad day.

Yeah, Warren is about the only current driver that you could use to give them some idea of Grumpy's accomplishments and like I said I don't mean to take anything away from Warren he's always been a fierce competitor and a strong runner but not on the scale of Jenkins.

It's hard for me to imagine people that are fans of drag racing not knowing about the likes of Grumpy Jenkins, Sox & Martin, Gapp and Roush (yep Jack Roush, the "Cat in the Hat", was a drag racer before NASCAR) , etc. or even Don Garlits for that matter ! But there are a LOT who haven't, I must really be gettin' old. Those were really the "Golden Years" of drag racing........

poncho62 - No from everything I ever read or heard he's pretty much like that all the time, at least when he's "working" anyway.

Well, I.....put a smile on the "grumps" face....It was the York US 30 musclecar madness show in 2002. I was getting a t-shirt signed by William Tyler Jenkins himself and the man sitting next to him told me, " just pull the shirt out of the bag halfway so Bill can sign it." I thought, If I'm paying for a dang shirt...I'll get it signed where I want!!!! So I pull the shirt out, fully open it and placed it on the table. Grumpy says "Didn't you hear him say just pull it out of the bag"? I turned to my buddy about 40 feet away and shouted "Hey, the Grump just grumped at me"!. Everyone in ear shot laughed and Grumpy himself scowled and me and then broke into a big smile while shaking his head!
