booger@MSDR -- Not really sure what's meant by that. I just noticed in our referral logs that we were getting visitors to this thread from V8Buick.com. The V8Buick.com post I had referenced, in which powermelissa is called out, post #9 in that thread, is dated January 2, 2008.

That's *exactly* my point. 15 months later.

There's obviously no spam problem if Melissa is not posting on that site anymore, and hasn't in over a year.

The link you posted is nothing more than a troll at work. Trolling shouldn't be encouraged, as that's a violation of many site's TOS. This whole thread is encouraging people to click links to dead threads and bring them back to life with a comment.

If a thread is over a year dead, leave it be...

Okay then, let's start a 'who killed JFK' thread.
Time is of no importance - it's the facts behind it all that count.

She probably wasn't born yet. But I am getting sick of the CEO of Tenneco.

Me too, I am still on the fence a little on the whole subject. One thing I can say Jon had some some incredible leg work! HOLY CRAP, if he was getting paid for the time he spent he would be raking in the dough.

I thought I spent a lot of time on the net!

not up to date on your internet terms, are you?

Trolling and thread-digging are hugely offensive in the forum world. Time IS very important. A 15 month old thread is obsolete. A 2-3 week old thread can be obsolete. Encouraging the use of trolling and thread-digging to promote this negative ad campaign is no better than spamming. Two wrongs don't make a right.

For the flip side of the coin, here's a nice list of about 25 forums who DO want PowerTV posts.

Trolling & thread digging are nowhere near as offensive as people who assume to know what's best for forums.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you work for PowerTV.

re: guerrilla marketing bust: PowerTV working for Holley, Comp Cams, SEMA, GM, and others

Booger@MSDR -- Thanks for the link, I hadn't realized that your site was a business partner of PowerTV.

I appreciate your comments, and I certainly respect your right to be heard. I have no intention of deleting this thread. There are only 20 or so sites that have publicly busted powermelissa and PowerTV for now, but when that number rises to 50, or 100, your comments here will still be preserved, and your right to voice your opinion will have been honored.

Bear in mind that I'm judging the response to this campaign by reading the responses of all the involved forum members on this site and others. The vast majority is clearly, clearly in support of us, and grateful for the heads up. As an admin, you eventually learn that 1 person making 20 posts is still just the opinion of 1 person. If your goal is to sway the tide of opinion, a more effective strategy might be to go on to all of those forums, and let them know how wrong they are.

BTW, 70aqua_custom at V8Buick.com made a hilariously sarcastic post about this. It's one of the best yet. Here it is:

This is terrible news. I thought Melissa sounded nice and I was hoping to meet her someday. My life is ruined now. Not only that but now I won't know where to buy car stuff without her help. Every weekend, I watch the "PowerblockTV" four hour infomercial on TV but somehow I miss the names, websites and phone numbers of the vendors. I sit there with my credit card and phone in hand and they repeat the numbers over and over and over but I just can't remember. Now, without Melissa right here on V8Buick to help me spend my money I'm screwed. I don't know what to do, where to turn. I quit. It's over. I'm out. I'm done.

LMAO! What do you think Jon is doing? He's assuming to know what's best for all the automotive forums on the internet, and "warning" us about how evil PowerTV is.

Negative, I do not work for them. I simply have based a decision off the whole story instead of half.

re: guerrilla marketing bust: PowerTV working for Holley, Comp Cams, SEMA, GM, and others

booger@MSDR -- just to clarify 100%, although you may not "work" for PowerTV, you do indeed have a business relationship with them, is that correct?

The problem here is that the vast majority of people who are sticking up for PowerTV either know them personally, or profit from a relationship with them, or are otherwise financially connected with them.

While we respect the right of such people to express themselves, we would be foolish not to take their opinion with a grain of salt. A big grain of salt.

Also, here's another forum covering this: Manipulative Marketing In Forums . Check out the "Coca-Cola" posts in that thread, posted by "Zap". Very clever, especially post #6 in that thread. It reminds of a hilarious parody article in The Onion: I'd Love This Product Even If I Weren't A Stealth Marketer.

Vast majority, I don't think so but I'm not going to invest the time you have into this to prove it. The majority of the sites you've listed have some type of exclusive advertising rules where mine does not. That's the ONLY reason those sites have a problem with the PowerTV posts. My site is different, because like yours, I personally foot the bill and get to make the rules. My sponsor program is simply a local shop promotion and has nothing to do with collecting money in exchange. Therefore, I have no rules on exclusive advertising, and also why no rules were broken with James/Melissa posting about their business on my site. A few posts here and there is by no means spam either.

I don't know about being a business partner of PowerTV, but I do have one of their free video channels for my site. It is a nice service to have video hosting that I don't have to pay anything for, or get advertisers to foot the bill. As for making money, yeah, it's generated a whole $3. [sarcasm]That's GOT to be the swaying factor in my decision. I can almost buy a Happy Meal.[/sarcasm]
