re: guerrilla marketing bust: PowerTV working for Holley, Comp Cams, SEMA, GM, and others

Another: http://www.firstgenmc.com/ubbthread...t&Number=131039 .

Also, noticed that James is doing another round of damage control. He's really spinning hard on this one. Recall how we reproduced Lloyd Hunt's MySpace avatar in the PowerTV article? James is now spinning that as "stealing honeymoon photos" from a "personal website". No joke. You can see him in action on 3.8Mustang.com: http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/sho...e=2#post3288045 .

He goes on to say that people from Hotrodders.com emailed Lloyd, and threatened to "take him out". Really, that's exactly how he worded it.

They took him to school on 3.8Mustang.com, but I figured it would be a good idea to add a "FactCheck" section to the article detailing James's spin tactics: http://spankmymarketer.com/powertv.html#factcheck

re: guerrilla marketing bust: PowerTV working for Holley, Comp Cams, SEMA, GM, and others

He sure is. Of course, your parody logo is perfectly legal, and falls well within the boundaries of "fair use" under copyright law. This is why you see numerous similar parodies on late-night TV talks shows. Technically, it's called a "subvertisement". More details on the Wikipedia page for "Subvertisement".

Check out this post on 3.8Mustang.com: http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/sho...e=2#post3288045 .

Recall how the PowerTV page uses a photo of Lloyd Hunt, the guy that admitted on his MySpace page that PowerTV is an "online viral video marketing company"? Then, when we published that, it was deleted from his MySpace page?

Anyway, on 3.8Mustang.com, they call James out on that. He turns using a MySpace photo into "stealing" "honeymoon photos". Then, he says that we emailed Lloyd, and threatened to "take him out". No joke, that's exactly how he words it.

Once again, that's his MySpace avatar -- the photo that he chose to represent himself with publicly on MySpace. We used that photo, and James says: "When it comes to someone stealing your personal photos from your honeymoon and then other members send him e-mails saying they "know where he lives" what would you do?"

Classic. Of course, they didn't fall for it, and James gets taken to school.

Anyway, there are a bunch more sites discussing this. Here are the public ones:

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/bo...ic.php?id=33401
http://www.killbillet.com/showthread.php?t=7327

Also, our old friend Richard Rawlings attempted to post on JockeyJournal.com. In his first post, he was trying to sell a bike, and plug a new marketing venture (the El Diablo "Run"): http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/...ead.php?t=29645 .

Needless to say, he didn't get very far.

re: guerrilla marketing bust: PowerTV working for Holley, Comp Cams, SEMA, GM, and others

I keep thinking that the referrals to the PowerTV page are going to die down, but they're not stopping. Including the private discussions in forums on this, the count is now well over 100.

Powerscott pmed me time or 2 on v8s10.org quite a while back. I always thought it seemed fishy. He's banned now.

Geez, Jon, can't you resist poking hornets' nests?

I take a sebaticle, um sabatackle, er, time off away from the hobby (yeah, that's it, I can stop any time I want) and come back to see another Busted! and a long thread full of new, anguished, angst-filled defenders of spamming, deceiving, marketing by any means and the holy crusades of sales.

Y'all could've at least saved me a troll or two to whack. Even a lowly astroturfer would have been nice.

I haven't finished reading through all of it yet, but wanted to say, THANKS! You've obviously put a lot of work into this and once again stuck your neck out with a bullseye on it, attracting real and feigned criticizm as well as the attention of the payers of big law firms.

The people behind these deceptions deserve to be exposed. As one of the old dudes commented early in the thread (I'm paraphrasing rather than quoting), 'It's one thing for the kids to take a shortcut through my yard. It's another for them to start selling Christmas trees in my driveway.' I would add that it's even worse if they were to lie about what they're doing (what was that about a charity from the monkeyboys? who was it that's a big fan of <insert auto hobbyist segment here>?) while handing out sales literature for Christmas tree accessory sellers and calling the literature 'hobby fan pix'.

My local hardware store owner doesn't come to my living room pretending to be someone else and try to convince me to buy his wares. The car parts clerk doesn't hire stooges to 'hang out' with me to show me videos of them installing his wares on their cars. I don't see why we should tolerate lies and faked personas just because they change the label to "stealth marketing".

I got no use for liars and thieves. Hired liars and thieves are even lower. Don't want 'em as neighbors or false friends. What else would they do for a dollar?

What a pos 750-four....

The "plug" is wrongly attributed to R. Rawlings.

The "El Diablo run" is organized by the members of the Jockey Journal, not dickhead Rawlings.

Do a search on the jockey journal and you will see many references to several of those runs from long, (2 years) before RR joined.

One thread,(of many), that demonstrates that Rawlings has nothing to do with the EDR.
http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/...ight=diablo+run

Dickard Rawlins was capitalizing on the runs popularity on that board to try to sell that heap. In true form as a salesman.

Those guys won't tolerate him at all. I know of a few of those guys from the "horse", and they are no weekend warriors .

Later, mikey
