re: Guide for beginner hotrodders

The organization of forums and links is great for the details and subsystems of a rod. How about an outline of the process? The journals show how people go about building a hotrod from start to finish, but there are gaps, dead-ends, backtracking, etc.

Maybe something like:

1. Acquire vehicle
1.1. Salvage
1.2. Partly built
1.3. Kit

2. Goals
2.1. Daily driver
2.2. Drag
2.3. Trailer queen

3. Project housing
3.1. Storage of vehicle
3.2. Storage of parts
3.3. Shop tools
3.4. Hand tools

4. Disassembly
4.1. (what first?)

5. Fabrication

6. Prep for assembly

7. Assembly

This stuff might be second nature to those with lots of experience, but you can see I get really fuzzy on the details the further along it gets.

Thanks!

First of all, thanks Jon for compiling all the info. Very useful.

But when I try to access all from this site - 500cid.com - I see this:
The requested URL http:// was not found on this server.

Can somebody help? This is very interesting for me...

40 chevy coupe

I am looking at making a hot rod using a 40 chevy coupe.

Does anyone know if there will be any major problems using this make and model?

I intend to change drive, engine, interior and etc.

I have a great builder in the area who can do most of the work.

Please let me know if I should look at another make and model.

Thanks

re: Guide for beginner hotrodders

I noticed you posted the link to MTS's web site (500cid.com), so perhaps you would be open to linking to my site? It's a Cadillac web forum for the 472/500 motors. I think it would be a good link because the board is chock full of old timers who really know their stuff and have a lot of experience in a lot of areas when it comes to hot rodding know-how. I learn something new every day from reading the posts there. Check it out:

Thanks!

good guide but where do I go for hands on?

Well as for many of us, we are hands on type of guys. I don't want to be a rebulder for a living, but want to make is a serious hobby. As far as schools are concerned, do you have any recommendations on where to go? Unforchantly I am not that handy with a wrench. But am very eager to fill my brain and get my hands turning.

Hey GREAT place to JUMP IN at BUT...

I have always admired seeing a good looking classic at the same time like to hear the mighty ROAR of a slammin V8 to where it looks like the car is about to TAKE OFF!!! If any of you have caught one of my posts, you would know that i am a novice(67 Mustang coupe w/original 289) and this beginners guide will come in handy for me! BUT how can i get the best of both worlds? My car is coming out pretty decent(as soon as i get my camera working i will put up some before after pics) And is coming out on the "good looking" side. BUT I ALSO want that "lift off" look at the line... don't want to get left in the dust out here in Mexico! Here in Exile it is very hard to get parts and even harder to find some one who is willing to go across the border and get them for you. SO nearly everything is twice the price to get it shipped to you internationally! ANYWAY, "Xcentric" helped me with getting a nice carb(edlebrock 600 perfomer) in there which also led to the change into a edlebrock intake manifold. SOON I will be buying the complete pentronix system (distributor and all the flame thrower line(coil, cabels, ignition)) WHat can i do next to begin flight prep... ...I hope i am not making an *** of myself, as i said i am new and a novice and have admired people as yourselves and now that i am getting my hands dirty really is helping me keep busy and out of trouble...BROKE but out of trouble...my girl thinks i love my car more then her.....HAHAHA what a joke....OF COURSE!!!!!

re: Guide for beginner hotrodders

Super job and a great idea Jon.
At my age when I have a question on something, the answers come form the same guy who asked the question, thats scarey. Been building Old Cars since the mid 50's. There is always something that comes up that I haven't delt with before.

re: Guide for beginner hotrodders

[DI am doing a 41. A little different as that was a change year, however I am told that you can put a SB Chev and 350 transmission in with out cutting the cross member out. If you want a 700R4 as I am doing, you have to cut the center out or remove the cross member. to make it fit. I can show you pictures of how I cut my cross member to accept the 700R4 if you would like.
Due to limitations on working area I did not do a frame off build. That sure would have made for a better cleaner, neater job. I wanted to leave my Pwr braken mounted on the existing cross member and was told it could not be done. I can now tell you it can be done without a lot of problems.
