Guideplates on a '73 SBC head?

Do you need to use guideplates on a stock 1.94, 1.50 SBC 400 cylinder head. I saw on other threads that if I have pushrod slots instead of round holes that I don't need guideplates. Is this true?

I am running Erson 1.6 roller rockers. Will I need to use a pushrod slotting tool for the pushrods to clear? My cam is at a .488" lift. With the rockers that comes out to .520"

you don't need guide plates if the heads are stock, as for that matter stock heads can't use that much cam, they poop out at about .480 lift, sometimes you have to use a device called a "Louis tool" to elongate the stock guide slots, rotate the engine thru an entire cycle and check the pushrods to make sure there is clearance front and rear side of the pushrod and the guide slot.

HI,
I agree Bob ive had the same problems. When using rockers with a ratio higher than 1.5 ive had to mill the slot in some guide plates deeper>

Thanks
Jeff
