Gun Shy(SataRPvsSata2000vs670plus)

I still can not make up my mind. Somebody please do it for me. I had all intentions to buy a devilbiss 670plus, but today I stopped in the local shop looking at paint colors and the guy put a new green sata rp in my hand. It felt really good in my hand.. Extremely light. My compressor(cobalt 7hp single stage highoutput rates 15cfm@40psi) Is this too close to try getting the sata2000. Is there a big difference in the rp and the 2000 if my compressor is too close to call. Will i be better off with the devilbiss for a $100 cheaper.

Also if i get the sata, what size tip should i get... 1.3 or 1.4

The paint im going to shoot is the dupont hot hues(gun metal)

I hope im not wearing out this subject. Just not sure what to get>

Thanks guys
Aaron

sata

I have a buddy who works at a body shop and has a rn 2000 hvlp with a 1.4 tip. He does not like it and only uses it for primer. His boss has a rp with a 1.3 tip and they both love it.The tip size could be the difference,or it could be that one is a rp and the other is a rn.For what it's worth,Doug.

Aaron, here is a previous thread on guns. Have a read.

Best HVLP gun!

Now a couple of questions.

Have you ever painted before or used a gun.
Are you painting a complete car.
Do you intend to use the gun for all types of paint.

Let us know so we can help you.

Here is a link to the Dupont tech sheet.

http://www.performancecoatings.dupon...es/E-R3894.pdf

Since the product is basecoat, the DevilBiss GFG-670 will do a real nice job
for you on the base using a 1.4mm tip. You also need to clear coat the finish
the devil will also do a excellent job on the clear.

With your compressor the gfg-670 will be fine. The sata your looking at is
an air hog and in my humble opinion is over rated.

If you would like less over-spray then look at the IWATA Lph400 lvp gun
Its fine for base but not as good as the devil on clear coating.

Honestly the best all around gun for you or the gun I would buy would be the
gfg-670 plus. Its not limited to spraying base or clear really well as other guns
might be. Your money, Your call

If you can get a loaner or demo from your jobber then do so.

Good luck ><

I have painted 3 cars, using stage 1. I have never shot clear before. My stage 1 paint jobs came out ok. Not show finishes by any means. I used a $70 gravity fed napa gun. This will be my first clear coat job. I have been reading all of the threads on here about the different guns. I just cant make up my mind. I read a couple good things on the astro gun. How does it spray clear? I liked the price of it real well. How does the astro rate against the others.
The gun I held at the shop was a sata 2000 not an rp.
ps im not lucky enough to know anybody well enough for a loaner.

Thanks man.

Yep the Astros are cheaper, some folks like them for spraying base.
Pretty much any gun can spray base ok but when it comes to clear
its different. I have read that alot of the china made guns which are
sata knockoffs are not great at spraying clear because they are
unable to atomize the clear correctly. Clear is similar to your ss stuff
you painted so you really need a good clear gun.

I know the gfg-670 is not cheap at $275.00 but its a good gun for
all automotive refinish work. It might just be the only gun you ever
need. Its highly rated for clear coating.

Perhaps you might consider another avenue. Make a few phone calls.
Call devilbiss support with your questions, call sata, call astro if you can
Go from there.

BTW , I was talking to a DuPont jobber today. He indicated that that gun metal color you want to spray is a Tri coat system. That stuff aint cheap
either. Apparently you spray a black base, then Pearl white then the actual
gun color for it to look right.

Best of look to ya..

Tri coat.... The guy at the supply shop, said nothing about that. He said it was like anyother base/clear set up. He said nothing of the tri coat. This might change things.

Good deal man, I think you will like it. When you get the gun make sure they
ship the correct tips with it. Look at the tips the part number will start with
AV-213-Tip size

AV-213-12 1.2mm
AV-213-13 1.3mm
AV-213-14 1.4mm

The reason I mention this is that some internet retailers have supplied
the GTI Gun's tips with the Plus. They will fit but provide reduced performance.
Typically the Fan will not be as large. I think you should do fine though mine
were correct when I received the gun. Keep that in mind though if ordering
additional tips.

In the pack they include a handy air gauge to mount at the gun. I run my gun
at about 30psi full trigger depending on your air source you will need about
50 - 60 psi available. One other thing for best performance, you need to use
3/8" hose and 3/8" fittings for your air supply so as not to restrict air flow
volume to the gun.

Since you have sprayed SS before, look at using the 1.4mm tip as I have found it to work very well with the higher solids content SS paint.

Good luck on your project.

Let us all know how the gun works out for you.

thanks ><
