GURU help please

I keep getting a loud grind/ clank as i go to start my engine. Ive shimmed and reshimmed my starter several times. I have backed the timing off several degrees and this still occurs. The "clanking" stops for a couple of start up cranks but returns to this problem. Is there any guru out there that has ran into this problem before??

Specifications: Pontiac 400, super turbine 300 tranny, Mild cam

Have you checked the flywheel to see if the welds on the ring gear are broken, the flywheel can be cracked near or at the bolts to the crank, teeth on the flywheel could be worn or chipped.
You may have to put it up in the air, with the inspection cover off and have someone else turn it over (coil wire off) and watch the starter engagement to the flywheel.
Maybe you can see what is going on.

Same thing was happening to my 454 vette. 1st check the teeth on your starter if the look ok then you will have to replace the engine ring gear. I did both and everthing is ok now.
