H-Pipe or not H-Pipe

Once again the 86' crown vic. I'm ready to install the dual exhaust and the shop guy asked if I would like it with or without the H pipe. It's a $30.00 difference. Is there really any additional benefits added with the H-pipe or should I just save the $30.00 and go straight duals?

I would opt for the H-pipe (even more so for an X pipe). It helps equalize flow, pressure, and tone in the exhaust system. The X-pipes are more beneficial as its easier for air to change directions at 45 degrees than at 90 but any means of equalization is going to be beneficial. See if he can do an X pipe. If not I'd still go with the H.

for $30 i say hell yeah

53LEDSLED 07-23-2004 05:23 PM

thats very cheep

Go with the H, but and X would be better. For normal driving you wouldn't notice the difference between and H and X pipe. However, when under heavy throttle most exhaust gases will go past the H crossover and you loose most of the benefit, and X pipe on the other hand forces the exhaust to blend.

$30 is dirt cheap. For the Mustangs, I never paid less than $150 for an h-pipe. Go for it. :)

There is a guy on ebaymotors selling x pipes for about 30 dollars +s&h. ubendman or something

mitmaks 07-29-2004 10:18 PM

hmm... in MD its illegal to install an exhaust without an H/X pipe. Shop and possibly owner can be fined $100,000, & Jail time for it.

at least for any car without special tags on it

Is that true????

Ghetto Jet 08-01-2004 10:25 AM

no, that's false.

arch 08-01-2004 11:02 AM

False?? No...
Maybe I misunderstood the law...
However for emission-required cars H/X pipe MUST be installed. (If orignally equipped)
IE, you cant take an H/X pipe off a car that had it from the factory.

I know there is a $10,000 fine for any shop that doesn't put a catalytic converter on an exhaust system on a vehicle that originally came with a catalytic converter. However there is a loop hole, even if your car originally came with a catalytic converter if you remove it yourself prior to having an new exhaust system put on, the shop does not have to put a catalytic converter on the car when they put an exhaust system on.

arch I don't even know of any vehicles that come from the factory with an X or H pipe, but if they're are any I doubt it's illegal to not replace and x/h pipe as it has no effect on the pollutions emitted from the vehicle.

go for the x pipe you wont regrete it. and if its too much then get the h its worth it also.
x pipe first choice h pipe second.

Mr.CrownVic 08-01-2004 04:16 PM

I'll see about the X-pipe first, Would it really make a difference to a stock 5.0 crown vic?
