Had a weird welder problem tonight

I was welding up a bracket and all of a sudden the wire stopped feeding. I looked over and there were sparks inside the welder cover and I heard the wire bouncing around inside. I shut it down ad opened the cover and the wire had melted and broke off at the traction rollers, I didn't know if something had worn out and was getting a short. I pulled the broken wire and refed the spool and tried again with just a touch of the trigger. I could see the wire getting red hot, but all the way up to the spool. I thought that was weird, the pastic spool would have to be grounded for wire to conduct that far up. So I pulled the spool off and sure enough, there was a little tang of wire sticking through the plastic spool - weird huh?

This sounds familiar...a kid we had was welding something on a frame and called for me. He described what you did and said it happened twice in a row after fixing the wire. I looked down and the frame was touching the cart. I pushed it off the frame and we had a good laugh.

I seen the problem as soon as I looked at the photo. Your welder is red and not blue, LOL.

Let say you didn't shut the machine off, would it just have continued to do that until it hit the duty cycle then shut the machine down?

No, as soon as I let off the trigger, the power is cut to the wire in the spool.
