That does sound like the way to go...
I cant believe nobody has invented some kind of sand blasting wand or something made just for this,its a common enough question that I've never heard a good solution for.
Electrolytic would probably be the best DIY way to do it if it was all apart but you would have to build a tank big enough to submerse the frame.I knew a guy that did his truck cab this way and it worked very ,very well,the hard part was building the tank (plywood and a swimming pool liner) after that you just connect the power source and walk away for a couple days..
I tried it on a smaller scale and it was very ez to do even my for my first time,I was very impressed how well it worked,no rust at all...
