Happiness is a big block in a Luv Truck!

A buddy and I decided to have a go at a project together. Both of us are hurting just average working stiffs, with average salaries. He had a back-halved Luv Truck and no engine, I had an engine with no chassis to stick it to sooo. 1+1=3 right?

Here's my engine. 496" BBC, ported MerlinIII heads, 11-717-9 Comp roller cams, 12.7-1 compression, 454R intake and 1050 Dominator (not pictured obviously).



Here it is in the truck. it was a tight fit. Big block Vega headers from Hooker worked like a charm.



Here's the truck wating to be loaded this morning. Ladder bars, 4.30 gears and Powergilde with a 4500rpm ATI converter.



Here's the result with only basic tuning. It's the first pass off the trans brake and only the second pass on the engine.



I can't describe how happy I am with this little project. All together we have less than $7K in the whole truck and with some tuning I think we'll see 5.90's. There's a 5.80 index class at most of the track that's reall popular with the fans. I think a 100hp dose of go-juice might get us there and let the pistons live a healthy life. I'm stoked!

Thanks guys.

We're taking it out again this Thursday night for test-n-tune. I'm going to do some plug chops, change jets if it needs it and try a tapered 1" spacer under the carb to see how far I can get with that. Then I'll go a little harder on the launch until it starts to spin too much. Right now I'm taking it easy on the launch, 3500 rpm. I'd like to see a 5.90 out of it before i go to the giggle gas.

Awesome little project. May I ask what tube size headers that you used on this? Or even better if you have the part number from Hooker that you used?
I am building a 72 Luv BBC myself, and have run into header problems.

They are for a Vega, pn. 2240. They have 2 1/8" primaries and a 3 1/2" collector.

The only issue I had with them was was the low profile oil pan we used. There's no interference with the pan kickout but one primary tube is very close on the right side. It's not a big deal on a drag car, it helps get the oil up to temp a little quicker, but you'll need to use a standard pan for any extended driving.

One more thing I thought about,

You will need a remote oil filter mount. the only alternative is a very short filter like an AC Delco PF454. The left side header doesn't allow for a long filter to to be used directly on the block.

Cool, thanks. We tried an old pair of Camaro big tube headers, they were close, but ran into 2 or 3 tubes hitting. Oil filter would clear, but the problem was they hit the frame. We are also trying to do this on a tight budget, and the $530 set of uncoated headers is more than I want to spend at the moment. Maybe someone has a good used set out there, it would probably be really hard to find though.

Do you have any pictures of the engine in your Luv truck?
