Harbor Freight tire changer
Has anyone tried the portable tire changer made by Central Machinery in the Harbor Freight catalog? The item # is 34542-9uxb. It retails for something like $60. Is this junk? I'm tired of taking my rims and tires around to get changed, not that I do a lot of that but I think you know what I mean. Thanks!

i got one for my birthday about two years ago its hard to get the hang of some tires are a little tougher than others but i like mine

Does it need to be attached to the garage floor so it doesn't skate around when you are using it? Did you need to get the bead breaking tool? Thanks!

If you got nice rims, I definitely wouldnt get this, cause there is no depth gauge to protect from rubbing rims like the good machines got. You will also ruin your rims trying to break the bead more than likely. If you are still set on doing this, heres my tip, get a slide hammer to break the bead, this machine is nice but isnt necessary, you could get some tire bars, and make something that holds the tire. '
I dont know about where you live, but we charge $5.00 for mounting and balancing per tire. Assuming you are gonna get your tires balanced, wouldnt it just be easy to get them done at the same time? It takes me roughly two minutes to swap tires with the machine, doing tires like truck tires or geo metro tires that cant be put on the machine, takes me roughly 15 minutes to get the tires off, that doesnt include breaking a bead though, since I can use the machine for that.

I use mine a lot. I used it to put all the 16.5 tires on my truck that is my avatar. I have never bolted mine to the floor but it is a little tipsy that way. I have used it on all sorts of car rims. I have saved far more than the purchase price of this tool in the year that I have owned it.

Sounds like this would be ok for plain jane rims but not expensive wheels. Thanks for the replies.

Make sure when you do tires to get lots of lube around the bead, and be careful of zipper ruptures. If the tires starts make a popcorn noise, GET BACK, disconnect the air if you can without getting real close, then get back, if not, JUST GET BACK.

Way off topic...
Eric302, i see you live Waukesha. Did you happen to go to the Goodguys show this past September? I used to go when it was in Berrien Springs Michigan. Would it be worth a 8-9 hour drive?

I was out of town that weekend, but I heard it was a good show. This was held at the Waukesha County Fair grounds which is a nice setup.
