harmonic balancer

installed a chrome timing chain cover on a chevy small block when i used the gear puller to take it of the outer piece came off the center piece there is a rubber ring between the two now i cant figure out how to get the outer piece back on the center piece does anyone have a solution to the problem or is the balancer shot

Yep that balancer is toast, get the tool for the balancer, you will need it to reinstall a new one. Just a caution the chrome timing chain covers are notorious for leaking oil around the front of the pan, just a heads up on that.

I assume you used a regular puller (jaw type) to get the damper off. A balancer puller consists of a yoke that bolts onto the crank pulley bolt holes in the balancer. A large threaded bolt then screws into and through the yoke and pushes against the crank snout in order to pull the balancer free. Just a heads-up in case you have occasion to pull a balancer again at some point.

Pepi is right your balancer is shot. In the future don't use a gear puller on the balancer. You can go to Autozone or Advance and borrow the tool with a refundable deposit. Advance has a nice universal tool for removing & installing the balancer ($90 deposit). Autozone just has the removal tool. Balancers usually run $40-$60.

The puller that you should of used is also the installer. Summit has one that I use and it costs about $70.00 See link below
