Harmonic balancer, install ?
350 chevy, I have motor on stand and not quite sure if my balancer is on all the way. When I put my ruler in the balancer hole to go up to my crank shaft, and measure out to the face of balancer it is 1 inch. Is this correct? My engine is a 1968 / 69 block, TIA, Dana

how did you install it?

I used the tool, I didn't do any hammering at all. Actually it went on real nice

Harmonic balancer, install
Torque on Harmonic balancer bolt is 60 ft. lbs. If using an ARP bolt they have their own torque specs.

59, thanks but my measurement from crank shaft to balanc er front face is 1 inch, is this o.k? Dana

Put your accessories and pulleys on and see if the belt grooves line up...That will tell you
|
Yea Poncho, thats what I am going to do. I was trying to finish torqueing my damper bolt down but it will just have to wait.

What's caught my eye about your post is you mentioned it went on nicely. So I have to ask, by nicely do you mean easily? Did it go on without much resistance? Or when installing it you could feel the resistance but it wasn't excessive? Also before installing did you hone the balancers bore out any or sand it? Let me know and I can fill in more details.

Very little sanding (emery cloth), went on w/ just enough tension, seems to me anyway. Didn't go on where I could almost push it on with my hand.

Okay. What many don't know about balancers is the press fit is just as important as the bolts torque. If the balancers fit is too loose, it will move back and forth so little you won't be able to see it. All the while it's doing this the back and forth motion is working against the bolt until it breaks.
This is what happened to my 4.3 V6. When it did it broke the balancer in half and sheared a section of cast iron out of the cranks keyway about a 1/4 inch wide so the crank was ruined. So there I was with a engine I had just rebuilt with only about 10,000 miles on it and I had to put a crank kit in it, but first I had to get the new crank balanced which ran me another $150. |
Thanks for the info, but I am pretty convinced that mine went on o.k., but I guess I will be the first to know, lol, not really lol, thanks again, Dana
