harmonic balancer install

I am installing my harmonic balancer on my 383 stroker and am wondering how far the crank has to come into the balancer. It seems it isn't in there very far. You can measure an inch into the balancer to get to the crank. It is in past the seal. The bolt tightened up, just seems wrong somehow. I guess I thought the crank would come to the edge of the balancer. Let me know if I did it right. Thanx, Kevin
