harmonic balancers on ford 5.0's?

I was wondering why ford has 50oz, 25oz and neutral counter balances on there harmonic balencers? I know the 302 engine is externally balanced, but how can you tell what oz of counter weight you would need when replacing an old harmonic balancer on a 1983 ford 302? and what does the counter balance really do? can you put a 50 oz or 25 oz counter balance on just any 302?

The balancers are matched to the crankshafts and flywheel/flexplates 1980 and later are 50 oz prior to that they are 28 oz.They do not and cannot be interchanged as mismatching these parts can cause a quick death to your SBF.Also over the years Ford changed the length of the balancers which can be a real nightmare aligning pulleys. If you need a 50 oz balancer send me a pm,I have an almost new one from an '84 302 ,cheap deal.
