Post Has anybody welded a 2 piece 48 chevy truck hood?

I would like to weld my two piece hood on my 48 chevy 1/2 ton pickup.'

Before I do this is there anybody who might have any advice before I do it?

I like the idea of a smooth hood with no emblems and trim.

I will be using a wire feed Miller sp 135.
Thanks
Tom

Weld using a MIG. I did it using a series of tack welds going slow. It has to be welded solid or the areas not welded will eventually show thru.....Don

I did mine he is right alternate from one end to the other with spot welds to keep the heat down so it wont warp. then I use some filler with fiber in it to smooth it out after grinding it down. The heat from the grinder can cause warpage also. You can blow air from your air hose on it while your grinding to help reduce this. Still have a lot of work to do on mine had to do some patching and banging! Also one the Indented holes on the front were the emblem goes cut a cross in them pound them out and weld up the cross and grind it smooth. know what I mean?

I welded up the hood on my 50 1/2 ton several years ago and have the following advice.

1. Welding stores sell a product under various names which can be placed on each side of the seam to keep the heat from warping the metal.

2. Vary the spots welds and use .023 wire because you use less heat.

3. If you add a 1/8" or 3/16" rod in the seam you can peak the hood and this will help reduce warpage and make the job easier in the long run.

4. As was said before..."be careful when you grind the welds because that creates heat as well"!!!

They are already bolted on the uderside aren't they? Couldn't you just remove the strip from the top, tack it together at 6 inch intervals and then lead the gap? It would be a lot less grinding... grinding on sheetmetal=bad
