Hello, I have been looking throughout the Hot Rod Art section, for a little while now. Over this time, I have seen some awesome artwork. One of the things I saw that was pretty cool was, what you all called Vector, and I was wondering what program I use to do that, and a good place to get tutorials for it. I have used photoshop for a while now, so I know a little bit about digital art. But have never wanted to mess with Vector until now. Any help would be appreciated.

Adobe Illustrator by far the best vector art program... in stead of pixels it uses vector line art.

Ok, thanks. I'll look it up. I will also look for tutorials. Might be good enough to enter something legitimate in art contest by end of the year.

If you search the web then you should find a ton of tutorials..I used to go to www.tutorialoutpost.com

You tube also has some nice tutorials..

good luck and join in on the contests..they are fun, and good practice!

There's only one big difference with "Vector" and "Photoshop" when it comes to line work or images. Illustrator uses a true vector line and Photoshop uses a "Rasterized line" Vectors can be upsized, shrunk, and manipulated all different ways and still keep a clean extra sharp line. In PS the raster image is more coarse and can't be messed with causing loss of sharpness in all parts of the image. They also don't screen well and most shops can't really vectorize a really detailed photoshop image properly, they may as well do it themselves.

There's also a few free ones like http://www.inkscape.org/ which IMO is hard as Illustrator, lol. Corel, Xara and others all have the same user tyle of interface, it's what you feel comfortable with learning.

if you go to adobe.com, you can download a 30 day trial for free. I did it before buying and it really helped. They wont charge you at all, so if you don't buy it from them, at the end of the 30 days, it just stops working. then you buy it elsewhere for less. It's about $600.00 US. when you buy it from adobe. At least it was 2 years ago.

They also offer student discounts if you are in college or have a teachers credentials, it cuts it down to 25 % of the original price too.

I have CS3, 4 and Illustrator CS4, not really happy with the new bloated programs they've been making, a single install of CS3 was 4.7 gigs and 280 megs of updates once it was installed. I'm assuming part of this was the "Adobe Bridge" which is now non functional but can't be uninstalled.

Vector art is awesome, and once you figure out how gradient mesh works, you can take it to a whole new level. I barely use photoshop at all anymore for my artwork. Quick stuff for sure, but I like the little extra challenge of keeping it all vector art and still look like it could be photoshop.
