The steering boxes depending on manufactorer should only have about .040 slack at the most any more than that means the worm gears are worn you can rebuild it but for the price it cost it is much cheaper to go to a parts house like advanced, autozone, or napa and get a replacement they do have a core on them so bring the old one they run about 100 to 200 bucks for remaned units, if you rebuild it yourself and need the gears the gears run about the same price not including the seal kit and bearings.
