I believe that these are heads that have had the ports polished and a swirl pattern etched in (to keep enough turbulance in the air to keep the maximum amount of fuel in vapour state and prevent it from condensing)

How do you tell... I'd like to know too chuck will probably know

the swirl port head on a small block chevy has a tall narrow port with a "finger" that protrudes into the port just above the intake valve. you can't see it with the valve in the head. the casting nos. for a 350 will be 191 or 193. these are std heads from about 1989, they are VERY crack prone like all of GM's later castings.

I read in GM paperwork somewhere(I'll see if I can find it again), that the pre Vortec truck heads with the "High Swirl" intake port, reduced flow by 18* to increase gas mileage by 13*. Dan
