I checked out a buddies truck the other day (94 chev 5.7L) and it was making lots of bubbles in the rad , so I assumed he had a possible problem with a head gasket , we decided to tear it down and now that it is appart there is no 'obvious' problems with either head gasket , as well a no 'obviuos' problems with either head . Is there a common problem with these heads that I should be looking for , did they crack in a particular place ? The one thing that struck me as kind of wierd was when we took the valve covers off ,the rocker arms from #5 were a sort of shade of gold compared to every other one being dark black and dirty looking , the plug from that hole also had some build up on the ceramic portion of the electrode , is this some sort of indication to a problem ? While these heads do crack, it is far more likely a head gasket leak. Look on the head itself on the end cylinders where the fire ring on the gasket seals. It will be dark on the outer edge toward the end of the head.
