Post Head Gaskets

Ok this may sound like an amatuer question but I have to ask it. Does it matter which way you put head gaskets on. I mean is there an up side. I have a set of fel-pro gaskets for my SBC and the head gaskets arent marked "this side up" on either side. I know there is a certain way to put intake gaskets on because there is a "this side up" stamped on one side but I have no idea about the head gaskets. Someone give me a quick answer. There is a side with stripes on it and numbers stamped and the other side is just plain. I always thought the striped side went up but I really dont feel like pulling my heads for something this simple, might as well ask questions and do it right the first time.

Thanks, S10

Doesn't matter on the Fel-Pro's I've seen but if there was a choice (some engines have assymetrical gaskets) I always put the "print-o-seal" towards the head.

Thanks Chuck, I figured if it mattered they would have them stamped or something. Guess I'll torque em down.

Torque-em when you install em, and then torque-em after they have been warmed up running. Pay no attention to the "no retorque" sticker on the gasket, they all need retorquing from what I have seen.
