Should I Change The Factory Header Gaskets On Headman Headers Before I Put The Inner Finders On My 1951 Ford Fi With A 383 Stroker?
2 years ago I put on Pacesetter Headers and used silicone on both sides of the gaskets as recommended. I only got 2000 kms of use before one blew and they were re-tightened as required from the beginning.
I then ordered the cardboard type gasket that Pacesetter sells, soaked them in warm water for 30 minutes, then installed them on bare surfaces without silicone. I have since gotten over 20,000 kms and no problems since. Best job I`ve done yet, if this helps.
I tossed my set of hedman shorty headers in the swap meet pile after I got tired of the flange torquing on me. Could not understand why they did not use 3/8 flanges on those.
On the knock-off replacements I used the stock style three piece exhaust manifold gaskets. These come in the Fle-Pro rebuild gasket kit. They are the aluminum looking perforated pieces. The part number is MS9275B.
So far I have not had any issues with these. A lot cheaper than some of the other options and simple to install.
