my friend has a 66' el camino that he just bought some hedman headers for. he spent a long time trying to install them and he got one side done. he cant jack the car up high enough to do it from the bottom by the way so hes trying to do it from the top. he had to pull off the starter to do the side he already completed. he spent hours trying to do this project and is not even close to being done. hes doing this by himself also. he has no help so hes trying to hold many different parts and he says its not an easy project. my question is how to get the other side on. does he have to pull off the steering column or is there an easier way? im just the messenger so i cant really answer any questions about the car or the project. thanks for all the help and thanks for any responses.

They always go in easier from the bottom, especially on the driver's side.
An alternative that sometimes works is to rig a jack and wooden blocks under the hydraulic dampener on the front of the motor, unbolt the motor mounts (where the two halves bolt together), and jack the front of the motor up. May have to unbolt the tranny mount to get it to move enough.

As stated before the drivers side is always the hardest, and a hoist is your best bet or over a pit. Sometimes its almost impossible to do by your self. I changed mine on my 67 Camaro last summer and it was very hot, and I jacked and blocked and jacked and blocked. I swear the back bumper was almost touching the ground. A freind came along got underneath, and with a few twists and turns had it up in place for me to set the gasket and start a few bolts. Come on, give him a hand....:D :thumbup:

don't jack it up from the harmonic balancer. I was told to do that when replacing my oil pan gasket..... my balancer started seperating, had to buy a new one. Sure it may work for other people, but it didn't work for me. What helps me is those drive on ramps....... jack it up onto there, have one wheel resting on one while the driver side is jacked up with a jack and blocks then bam... tons of clearance, don't forget about safety.. jackstands wherever possible. hopefully this helps.
