header questions!!

I have a sbc going in a 78 malibu, i have just cheapo steel headers for it and i am running the wires as i believe a late model corvette would have, underneath and then back up to the distributor. Will these wires be fine if kept a mild distance from header tubes? I was also wondering about a small amount if header wrap roughly 6 inches down the tubes to keep wire boots from scorching?? i have heard good and bad about the wrap. The car will not see rain, and will only be driven in spring, summer, and fall. Any input would be great!

There are ceramic "boots" and insulating tubes that go over the plug wires (may require removing/replacing one of the plug wire ends to use it) as well as the header wrap. The ceramic boots may be overkill, basically you want to keep the wires and boots from contacting the headers and you want to protect them from radiant heat as well.

Whether to run the wires over or under the header actually depends on where the space to run 'em is. Other than that it doesn't make much difference except for how dirty or not they get.

Today's high quality wire materials that aren't touching the headers should hold up just fine. If you need some protection it's more effective to put an insulating sock on the boot and connecting wire, these are available at any speed shop.
