Headlight switch removal

Hi, I am having a problem removing the headlight switch from my 49 Mercury, Fatboys have a hard time getting under the dash. A person said their was a hole on the backside of the switch oposite of the wires. To release the knob shaft , insert a ice pick or similar and the stem with knob will pull out. Well did'nt happen . Any help with this will be appreciated.

I am not totally sure on a switch that old, but on all that I have replaced, you pull the switch knob out all the way until it stops, and there is a small spring loaded button on top of the swich opposite the wires that you hold down and pull the knob out the rest of the way. Then it is a simple matter of using a wide flat blade screwdriver to replace the switch. The button does NOT need to be pressed to reinstall the knob. Hope this helps....Allan
