GM 400 SBC's have head bolt holes that are drilled/tapped into coolant. That is why the head bolts have to be sealed on assembly of the engine.

You should drain the cooling system before pulling the heads, wp or intake.

I didn't really think about drain it I really didn't think they was any in it to be honest. I didn't know about the bolt this is the first 400 I have worked on. I am thinking about selling it and just get a 350 or 454 then mess with all the problem of the 400.

Research the 400 first, some guys like them- like me. If you're in my area and you decide to go w/a 350-based engine, PM me and lets talk about a swap.
