Heat problems

I know my car isn't a "Hot Rod" but it's my first car...I have a 1994 oldsmobile 88 Royal and my heat has some issues. It works the odd time...I've replaced the control unit b/c i originally thought it was that but it hasn't made a difference. It will cut out sometimes and only works the odd time. Usually I have to hit my dash to get it going. Hitting my dash made me think something was loose but after my boyfriend and i tore it all apart still nothing. There were two relays that were exact same...We know that one has to do with the heat. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?! Thanks

check and make sure the coolant level is at the top (radiator level) Most heater controls are vacuum operated. Run the engine until warm turn on heat. check both heater hoses. Both should be warm/hot. If not check the heater control to see if there is a vacuum at the valve. Should there not be a vacuum find out why not If a vacuum is present then the valve is defective, so replace it.

How is the thermostat?
