It's really not too hard to see how: No unions, no government mandated pollution or labor restraints coupled w/a dollar a day wages and rampant patent/copyright infringement.

it's possible that my dad has 1 of the cheap HEI distributors. he bought it at a car show for $100, and when it was first installed the timing was irratic and the truck had no power. truck died and wouldn't restart after a while. modual went bad.. swapped in a modual from the local parts store and timing is dead accurate/ has been running the 350 in the truck for a few years now.. the box the distributor came in was a basic brown box

How similar were your Summit distributor and your friends "eBay" distributor? These don't "look similar" they are identical down to casting marks on the aluminum and mold marks on some of the plastic.

FWIW I bought my first one because the 100 some dollars worth of ACCEL stuff I out in my factory GM HEI was DOA and Iwas hurtin' for money at the time and needed my car going STP ( Sooner Than Possible ) at the time. It worked perfectly.

I'm not saying all eBay distributors are the same and I'm not saying you won't get one that's DOA. I'm saying "caveat emptor", buyer beware. Just because it has a big name label and costs 3 times as much don't think it's necessarily 3 times better or even better at all.

I just wanted to add to this, i just picked up a StreetFire HEI unit, after my ProComp one died.

I had them side by side and on mine, you CAN see differences in the MSD unit, Not much, but its there, The module and inside wiring looks the same, But other then that, everything else just looks "Close"

Thinking i might have got a MSD unit before they went to the procomp stuff?

That would be good, there are a lot of these distributors floating around. It would be good if we could get a photo library of sorts for comparison purposes. Maybe we can make a Spotter's Guide to good vs. junk HEI 's. Might save somebody some money and or grief.
