HEI Conversion

I have a 66 corvette that I am looking at converting over to an HEI distributer system. I have the new HEI distributer with the coil on the top of the distributer cap. My issue is, ideally I would like to use the original external coil to keep more of a factory look. Is this possible and if so how would I go about doing it.

Thanks in advance

HEI Conversion

You could use an electronic conversion kit in your stock points distributor, change the points coil out with one that looks just like the stock one but, has higher output for elecronic ignition. Pertronix, Accell etc.. make the kits, I think some work with the stock coil also. Or use a Small cap HEI that use an external coil.

I dont think it would be possible to use a large cap hei with an external coil. The small cap HEI can be used with an external coil but requires a little more wiring.

Make sure you feed the HEI with full battery power. You car has a resistor wire for run mode which will drop the voltage to around 9 volts. The HEI will not be happy with that.

fuse panel has a couple

done

i dont knwo why some ppl like to try to make things more complicated than they need to be with aftermarket garbage etc

Get the petronix ignition i have used it several times and it really work great, You will have electronic ignition wit the appearance of the stock parts, You will be able to use your stock distributer / stock looking cap and wires and the old style looking coil. http://www.cbsperformance.com/ignitor.shtml . ....Cole

Accel used to sell a replacement coil cap for the traditional HEI that eliminated the coil and provided a conventional center terminal for use with an external coil. Of course, a large cap HEI isn't going to look anywhere near stock whether you have an internal or external coil.

Yes you can do it... with the large cap HEI. But you have to buy this to be able too...http://www.jegs.com/p/MSD/MSD-HEI-Ca...47893/10002/-1

But it would look nicer if you take a point's dist, And put a petronix kit in it..
