HEI dist in 57 Chevy

I installed a new GM crate engine. It has an HEI dist. which is much larger than an older style with external coil.
Removing the dist to prime the oil pump will be quite a challenge and in fact may require pulling it part way.
Is there any alternate ways to prime the oil system. I was thinking something like attaching an external oil pump to a remote filter kit and pumping oil through the engine.
Has anyone tried anything other than spinning the oil pump through the distributor hole???

Do a search for "engine pre-luber" or "pre-oiler", should come up here at Hotrodders and on Google.

Works like a pressure pot painting set-up. Hot Rod or Car Craft had an article on making one a while back IIRC.

Yup not much room for priming after the motor is in. Made the same mistake on a 56 Nomad my buddy owns. We used an old distributor to drive the pump. Left the gear off the bottom and stripped weights etc off the top. Had a round stub left on top. Used a 90 degree adaptor for our drill to drive it with. Worked well enough to get oil up to the rockers. Here's a link for a similiar one. Available at hardware stores.
