HEI Distributor on a 289 V8

I sent one thread out but, i don't think it was understood. I put an HEI distributor make for my 289 V8 on it and i have the engine at top dead center but, i cannot get the rotor to point toward the number 1 cylinder. The bottom of the distributor with the slot in it will not match up with the part that goes into the slot when i put the rotor in the right position to point to the number one position. Can anyone tell me how to get the slot to line up with the oil pump rod and get the rotor to point in the right direction. Thanks Ron. I need the help. I cannot get my baby started.

it should have a 5 1/16'' hex drive for the oil pump.give it a slight turn in the direction you need to go.it should drop in.

HEI Ford

Something does not sound right your distributor should not have a slot, the oil pump shaft on a Ford is a 5/16" hex.Look at the bottom of the gear on your old distributor and compare them and see if they are the same.I have an HEI in my Ford 302 it went in easy.Is this HEI new? maybe it was misboxed.See if you can post some pics of it.
